FOLDING FANS

MATH
Have a class discussion on line segments, angles the relationship they have to one another. How many different possibilities can you find in this fan design.

HISTORY
A long time ago (before electricity) people used fans as a way to stay cool. Fans can also be used for decoration and entertainment purposes. Recreate a fan which may represent a specific culture or time period. For example try to design something with lace to go along with the Victorian era.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Sometimes fashionable ladies of days gone by would sit and socialize and sip tea on a hot summer day. Create a script for a play in which you could use the folding fans, and have fun creating a plot and writing dialogue.

SCIENCE
Talk about the weather. Would one be more likely to use a fan in humid weather or in dry desert regions. Research various environmental conditions and create fans for the areas in which they would be most effective.

EXTENSION
Start a school fan club. Sell fans as a school fund raiser. Decorate the fans in your school colors. Bring them to sporting events or other school functions to show your school spirit.
