INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION

MATH
Look at a map and determine the distance from one location to another. Study different flight patterns and determine the fastest route to each location. Draw out the flight paths on a map and write in the word “hello” when landing in a given area.

HISTORY
Whitney Smith organized various flag organizations including the first International Congress of Vexillology (ICV), the North American Vexillological Association, and the International Federation of Vexillological Associations (FIAV). Try starting a flag club in a history class.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Try putting on a class skit and use some of the words learned in this lesson. Try adding pictures to help describe the country during the presentation. Try introducing other elements such as music and dance.

SCIENCE
Vexillology includes work in fields such as sociology. Discuss how images and words help to keep us connected as a global society.

EXTENSION
Try hosting a party and bring in tidbits of foods from different countries. Place an image of the flag next to the dish of its native origin. Greet guests by saying hello in the language of a specific country.
