Notice the design is made up of rectangular shapes and the blades are bent at angles from the base, try to have students identify the degree of the angles created in this design.

Have a class discussion about the history of flying machines. From the early prototypes designed by Leonardo Da Vinci during the Renaissance to the first successful helicopter in the late 1930’s designed by Igor Sikorsky .

Flying machines have been given many different names from war time aircraft to commercial airliners. Have students come up with a name and write it on their flyer.

Create a hypothesis, which way will the blades spin, clockwise or counter clockwise, discuss why, try out the weighted paper flyer to see the results, and determine what factors were involved in the direction the blades moved.

Have a competition, either individually or as teams and see who comes closest to a landing point that is marked by a circle on the ground.
